Border Security Legislation Must Be Passed

Posted by Rep. Phil Gingrey (September 26, 2006, 08:45 AM)

The Senate absolutely must pass border security legislation – the American people won’t have it any other way.  I was incredibly proud of the immigration measures the House passed in September, especially the border fence legislation.  In August, I had an opportunity to visit some of the more porous areas on our southern border, and it strengthened my resolve to get more high-tech fencing to the region. In fact, the most important lesson I learned on my trip was that with the right tools and manpower, securing our border can be a reality. I was surprised to learn that the morale of our dedicated border patrol is at an all time high because, as they told me, ‘Congress is finally paying attention to this problem’.

Below, I have posted a photograph I took while examining the border fence in the San Diego sector. This is the type of high-tech fencing infrastructure we need to implement along the most traveled parts of our southern border.  Check out the double fence, the high-speed access road, the infrared cameras and lighting – these technologies are helping secure our border, and we must continue delivering them to our U.S. Border Patrol.

We must shut down our southern border to illegal immigrants, and we can’t do it in a piecemeal fashion.  There’s a reason illegal immigration and organized crime is continually shifting from one part of the border to the next.  When our government concentrates on the problem in a certain area, smuggling becomes unprofitable and illegal immigration becomes too risky.  So they moved somewhere else. Now, instead of just addressing these “hotspots” along the border, the House is working to secure the entire border and shut down the flow of illegal immigrants into our nation.  It’s up to the Senate to pass this legislation and get it to President Bush’s desk for signature into law.

Celebrate Constitution Day

Posted by Rep. Scott Garrett (September 14, 2006, 05:14 PM)

I wish to bring to your attention a reminder that Monday, September 17th, is Constitution Day, marking the anniversary of the completion and signing of civilization’s most ingenious governmental guideline.

On September 17, 1787, thirty nine revolutionary and visionary Founding Fathers changed the course of history, securing liberties and freedoms that centuries of civilizations had only dreamed of and that democracies around the world have tried to emulate ever since.

I encourage all to use this day as a reminder of the true intent of the US Constitution and of all the rights and liberties guaranteed to them when our government was formed.  Today, more than ever, these freedoms are being encroached upon by all branches of government.

Highlighting and understanding what the Constitution actually says; what the intent of its authors actually was; not how it has been interpreted, stretched, or ignored will empower the public, like our forefathers once did, to stand up for their innate and natural rights and resist the growth and usurpation of power by our governments at every level.

As the Founder and Chairman of the Congressional Constitution Caucus, I recommend that on this day we each read and review the Constitution to ensure that each of us never lose sight and understanding of our guiding legal document.
